I get tired of so much of the “I created this AMAZING sales funnel gizmo super-duper widget package for launching your business to success” emails I often get after attending one of those misleading webinars I initially thought might be interesting or might have a few practical nuggets I could apply. I feel dirty just reading the over-hyped subject line much less the content.
The dirt comes from the sleazy “look at me, I’m doing this for you” lie that comes with a request for three easy installments of $897. And of course, the guy spamming you has spent years perfecting this widget package and used it himself to make hundreds of thousands of dollars and grow his email list —for spamming more people no doubt— to enormous numbers.
Counter this with people like Seth Godin or Michael Bungay Stanier who give things away and rarely, if ever, ask for money. And what they give away is not another complicated sales funnel or four-step system for building and selling your online “course” in underwater bilge pump cleaning, nope, these guys just give away value, and when you want more, they have things you can buy if you want to.
Here’s the rub.
One is a pusher, the other is a puller. One is trying hard to force something, the other is sharing in order to pull you into a tribe of like-minded folks who think about the same stuff. One is about me-me-me trying to make you into another me-me-me while the other is about creating a community of we who want to help each other. One is selling, the other is serving.
So, you can push or you can pull. You can sell or you can serve. You can make it about you or make it about better for more. Which camp are you in? Which camp is your business in? It’s your choice.
