Today, with so many voices out there vying for attention, standing out is a necessity … for companies … and people, including you.
Want a new job? Stand out … as competent and talented.
Want a promotion? Stand out … as valuable and necessary.
Want to make a difference? Stand out … as different.
This last one hearkens back to that great quote from Gandhi, “Be the difference you want to see in the world,” and, I believe, it is most important of all, because we need different, we need difference-makers. While you may want the new job or that promotion, we, our world (or even just a corner of it) need difference-makers more.
But what is “different”? And, better yet, what is “making a difference”?
Let’s look.
Different is… distinct; not ordinary; not like others; unique.
Making a difference is… significantly impacting people, organizations, cultures, etc.
Put it together. Demonstrating something unique or extraordinary (different) to make an impact on others (making a difference).
And why?
Hopefully, it’s to influence positive change, i.e., better relationships and better communities (a.k.a. homes, workplaces, buying spaces, schools, neighborhoods, you get the gist).
Face it, our world is sick with selfishness and dog-eat-dog competition. It is, in fact, making us physically sick (heart disease, strokes, and other stress-related ailments on the rise). It is, in fact, making us mentally sick (ever-increasing levels of depression, violence, and overall unhappiness to mention a few).
Don’t you think we could use some positive change? Don’t you think a bit more helpfulness, cooperation, generosity, kindness, and compassion would serve to improve things? And where do you think it begins?
It begins with people like you demonstrating what’s not ordinary. And what’s not ordinary is consistently showing up with helpfulness, cooperation, generosity, kindness, and compassion.
Imagine how that will impact your home and workplace. Instead of you working to get ahead, you work to help others get ahead. Instead of you getting more, you give more so others get more. Think that will stand out? Yes! Big, huge YES! And it will make a difference. And it will move things. It will change the status quo.
And here’s the irony. People who stand out as difference makers, more times than not, reap more success than those who stand out for themselves. It’s karma. What goes around comes around.
So, want a new job? Want a promotion? Don’t stand still. Stand out as different by making a difference for others.
