July 4 is a celebration of freedom. But it should also serve as a reminder as to what freedom means. 

Contrary to the belief of many, freedom does not mean being allowed to do whatever you please come what may. What it does mean is the ability to make choices and pursue interests. 

However, those choices come with a responsibility. A responsibility to not hurt others. A responsibility to not infringe on the basic rights of others to make choices and pursue their interests. 

While we celebrate, we must reflect and review our choices. We must evaluate the impact we make on others, our communities, and our environment. Are our choices helping or harming? 

Too many are making harmful choices with no concern for larger impact. Without voices speaking up in opposition, our July 4 celebrations are meaningless. Freedom is but an idea. And a nation based on it, a fiction. 

So speak up. Make good, helpful choices. Keep freedom’s flame burning by being responsible.
