Yes, it’s true. There is no best.
Why? Because tomorrow, somebody who’s working hard and continuously improving will make it, whatever it is, better.
Besides, our view of best is a moving target. Think of how our view of ideal body types has changed. In the 16th and 17th centuries, plump with rosy cheeks was optimum, but today, despite admirable attempts to be more inclusive, trim and fit are what are typically set as examples.
What this means is there really is no perfect. There is no such thing as “the best there will ever be.”
This means there are always possibilities. The ability to move forward is ever-present. The ability to go for excellence is something within our grasp every day.
But be clear, going for excellence is not about perfection. Going for excellence is about going for better …and better… and better. Excellence is about never sitting still. Good enough is never good enough.
So, what do you say? Will you go for excellence today? Will you do everything you can to be better than yesterday? Will you make your next conversation, email, meeting, report, burger flip, crank of the wrench, or whatever better than you did it two minutes ago?
Ordinary work is not excellent work. Ordinary work is sitting still. Can you afford to go for less than excellence? Can you afford to sit still? Don’t just think about it. Do something about it.
