“And now we welcome the new year. Full of things that have never been.” -Rainer Maria Rilke
What has never been? What a thought. It’s fraught with possibility. It’s energized with hope. It is supremely optimistic.
Oddly, this is what a new year does. I say oddly because New Year’s Day is, after all, just another day. Beginning another 365 day cycle on January 1 is arbitrary. It could just as easily have been August 1. But somebody at some point in time drew a line and said we should start over here.
And it’s that start-over that gives a new year its power over us. It’s that chance to try again. It’s that chance to somehow clean the slate and do what’s never been. Even if we tried before and failed, the accomplishment has never been and it sits there waiting, tempting us. It bellows, “you can do this if you just keep working on it.”
So, what are you working on? What is out there that has never been for you that you want/need to accomplish? What do you need to dust off and restart?
Maybe the ultimate new year question for now and every new year is, “what has never been that I/we need to bring to life?”
Happy New Year!
