If you’ve read much of my work at all, you know the idea of “me first” is typically anathema to me. However, there is a place for it.
When I am working on a talk or workshop, my thoughts are on satisfying my customer for sure. But there is someone else I must satisfy first, and that someone is me. I have to be happy with the product or I cannot feel good about reviewing it with the client much less delivering anything final.
This means having standards and paying attention to details that the customer might not even be aware of. It means spending time and effort sweating little big things.
And… all of that sweat is very much about me. The first inspection must meet my standard before anyone else’s.
Putting your standards first establishes your commitment. It’s the first step in defining your work as art and the driver of mastering your craft.
Unlike most self-focused endeavors, this type of “me first” is not selfish. It’s service.
