America. It’s got a lot of problems these days. Shootings, homelessness, a widening wealth gap, opioid addiction, rampant misinformation, wacky conspiracy theories, for-profit healthcare, and the list goes on. It often seems like the whole experiment has gone terribly wrong.
Everyone these days seems to be arguing about all of the above. Everyone has a view, an opinion, and a staunchly defended position. Voices are loud. Fingers are pointed. Factions are gathered.
Yet, if you go into the National Archives Museum, there is a hallowed display containing the Constitution. And written there are guarantees that allow Americans to argue, yell, scream, write, pray, and do a whole variety of things as long as others are not kept from doing the same.
While it may seem there are a million problems—there are—there is also the freedom to talk, argue, and do something about solving those problems…all without being hauled off to jail, or, worse yet, put in concentration camps until properly conditioned for general society.
If you live in the USA, please, rail against the wrongs, work for change, and complain if you must, but be proud that you can. Be proud that even those with whom you disagree can have a voice. It’s what many died for, and it’s what needs to be remembered when so much seems hopelessly wrong.
