If you want better work, think about who you want to be.

Industrial Age management wants us to keep our sights set low so we will stay in line and do as we’re told. But people who want to make an impact tend to challenge the status quo, and since that has the possibility of unpredictable results, Industrial Age managers would rather not have to contend with it.

But here’s something you need to decide. You can either be…

  1. A cog in the machine, a mercenary who stays in line and gets the job done to get that safe, regular paycheck.
  2. A half-hearted soul who wants to make an impact but doesn’t feel they should have to or doesn’t want to step up their work to do it.
  3. A hustler who will do anything and everything to get that promotion, pay raise, or whatever makes them successful or appear successful.
  4. An artist who solves problems, delivers unique value, makes a difference, and becomes noteworthy.

If you’re a host at a restaurant, your job is to seat people, and seating people is what mercenaries, half-hearts, and hustlers do with varying levels of effort. However, to be an artist and stand out, you not only seat people, you make welcoming an art. You make it so that no one else welcomes like you.

Artists find new answers, connect pieces remarkably, or do things in a new way. They are constantly asking, “How can I make this better, do it differently, or turn it into something new?”

You don’t find your passion, you create it, not by finding work you love, but by loving the work you do. And that begins with a choice.
