When you take a job, you make a promise. It’s a promise to follow certain rules, do a job, and work in a way that fits a culture. That may mean agreeing to work certain hours and wearing a uniform. It may mean following a script or getting in line and marching to a beat.
However, what you don’t promise is to be a robot and not evolve. You don’t promise to lose your humanity or be unethical. You don’t promise to be indifferent and show no compassion.
While you are responsible for the promise you make to get the job done, wear the uniform, and follow the rules, don’t let that blind you to an opportunity. An opportunity to be unique and better at what you do than anyone else doing it. An opportunity to see things differently and solve problems in new ways. An opportunity to lead as an example of professionalism, humanity, artistry, compassion, excellence, and service.
Lesson? Do not renege on your promise, but don’t waste the opportunity either. You may not be doing what you love, but you sure as hell can love what you do by treating your work like it’s your child. Develop it. Nurture it. Raise it to its potential. That’s love. And that will get you out of bed every morning to be the leader you can be.
