Management. It’s probably hurting you more than you think.

Management. It’s really just another word meaning control, and we need control, just not over people for at least two reasons. One, it’s not effective on humans, and two, it hinders progress.

Typical control methods are sticks (punishment) and carrots (rewards). The problem is that because people have the power to make up their own minds, these efforts most often result in mediocre outcomes. In addition, the good employees who want to contribute more and be treated like adults begin looking for greener pastures, which ultimately leaves organizations with the leftovers, a largely indifferent or grudgingly compliant staff. Yet another ingredient in the recipe for average.

An even more worrying outcome of control is the impact on the potential of the business. We live in a world of constant change where new ideas, solutions, and inventions are a continual need. Creativity is a necessity if companies hope to stay relevant and attractive. Management, though, is a killer of the creative impulse. When policies and rules are the order of the day, people’s voices are shut down along with their innovative spirit.

Can your business afford an average team doing average work? Can your business afford to ride on the status quo with little to no innovation? Do you really believe that your business can somehow succeed by being “good enough?”

You’re most likely shaking your head no. But what’s the alternative?

It’s inspiration. To inspire people to bring their best instead of requiring them to get in line and deliver their most is the way out of the perils of control. When people feel they have a voice, they want to help move the mission forward. And it is that “want to” attitude that will significantly move the dial toward excellence and creativity.  So, will it be sticks, carrots, and control, or listening, collaboration, and encouragement? The choice is yours.
