The Joy of the Marathon

“Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which [one] has overcome.” -Booker T. Washington

Success. For many, it seems to be an obsession. They have a goal, whether it be wealth, family, possessions, or myriad other objectives, and they view it as a shiny trophy to be obtained. Success for them lies in their ability to show everyone they’ve made it, and they borrow money, time, or both, or put their values on hold to achieve it. However, when they reach what they believe is the destination, they realize they’ve missed the wonders of the trip. And with all the anxiety and depression all around us these days, I have to believe that a big contributor is staking your definition of success on crossing some finish line while missing everything along the way. As I’ve told my children many times, life isn’t easy, so embrace the struggle, as it makes everything else sweeter.

So, here’s a big question: is the journey of life just a means to an end, or is it really the end in itself?

My answer. Success is not so much about what you have but what you have done. True success is about learning the lessons of life over the journey and making an impact all along the way. It’s not a destination; it’s a ride. It’s not about stuff or status; it’s about life savored and shared.

So, enjoy the trip, the wins and losses, the good and bad, and remember, you see more sights in a marathon than you do in a sprint.
