The AI panacea …not.

AI is taking away mindless jobs and giving people more time for living. Yeah, but … how will people live without work?

With every new “miracle” comes another problem. And, as usual, the people touting the “miracle” as a panacea don’t think through to logical conclusions. People without jobs can’t afford to buy things, which leads to business failure. People without jobs can’t “live” in any fulfilling way. People without jobs will get restless. People without jobs will get angry. The “miracle” isn’t such a miracle after all.

Perhaps if, from the start, we had created meaningful work instead of mindless work, we wouldn’t have this conundrum. Perhaps if we had given people more time for living, rather than demanding 40+ hours a week plus calls and emails during off-time, we wouldn’t have this conundrum. Perhaps if… (you can fill in the blank here with any number of ways we have made work suck), we had done things differently, we wouldn’t have this conundrum.

Here’s a thought. What if we decided to do better? What if we decided to have AI partner with employees to make work more meaningful by taking over the mindless stuff so humans can create, innovate, and interact in human ways with other humans? What if we decided to have AI partner with employees to free up more time for living by taking away time-consuming, mundane chores? What if we simply decided to prioritize humans before machines and develop new workplaces on new models where people can be their best by doing what humans do best, and machines can be their best by doing what machines do best? No replacing, just enhancing and evolving.

That’s a panacea I can get behind. What about you?
