Here is a question that should be no less than priority one for business leaders today. How do we do business in a way that makes the world a better place while, at the same time, allowing organizations to make money to survive and thrive?
Every business school in the land and every business student should be focused on answering this question. No MBA should be doled out to anyone who hasn’t got a firm idea for moving forward on this.
Between climate change, the growing wealth gap, housing affordability, political lunacy, a failing infrastructure, astronomical healthcare costs, etc., we have enormous problems. And finding solutions is going to take more than just public-sector initiatives. The business world is going to have to step up. Business leaders are going to have to shift from selfish interests to other-focused service interests if we hope to find meaningful solutions.
It’s time for real leaders to emerge in business—not those folks who just have titles, big paychecks, and a lot of hot air—but real leaders who enroll people in voluntarily moving in a solution-making direction.
We need leaders who understand the power of leadership through service. Leaders who listen. Leaders who see. Leaders who want a better world.
If you are one of them, get to work on that question up top. We need you.
