Does your business put people first or profit first?
Knowing this matters because one is about benefiting something greater than yourself, and the other is not. And when your work benefits something greater than yourself, it matters more than work that is self-serving. People would miss it if it were gone. And I would venture to say that being thought of that way is desirable, yes?
So, I ask again, does your business put people first or profit first?
If you are hemming and hawing, wanting to say “people” but feeling like it might be profit, there is an easy test.
Have you ever met someone who talks about their family a lot? You just know what’s most important to them.
Well, that’s a good test for learning what matters most. What do people talk about most in your business? Do meetings focus on human impact or financial impact? Do you typically talk about customers and needs or revenue and costs? What we talk about is what matters most.
Before responding to my people/profit question, take some time to observe. What is the talk of your business?
And if you find that it’s profit talk, keep in mind, money is just a thing; it can’t buy from you, only people can do that.
