We Need Problem-Solvers. Do You Have What It Takes?

We have many big problems in this crazy world, and to solve them, we need two critical things: 1) a service-focused mindset, and 2) creativity.

Let’s look at these.

A service-focused mindset is one where you are willing to be inconvenienced by the work and committed to being helpful while doing it.

Creativity is using your training (skills/knowledge), innate determination, and unique you-ness (**made-up word alert**) to solve problems and innovate.

We (you) have it in us to work on solving the pressing issues of our time, and there are many of these. From climate change to political train wrecks to education to healthcare, none of it gets fixed without service and creativity, and that is something we all have (or can have if we give a $#!+).

In this world of me-ness (**another word fabrication**) where the continual thought of “my needs and my wants” is what predominates, getting out of the way in order to solve problems and be of service is work we all must do (or suffer dire consequences). And while I am not suggesting you neglect yourself, I am suggesting you go against the me-first-always ethos that surrounds us. As Ken Blanchard so eloquently put it, “You don’t have to think less of yourself, just think of yourself less.”

So, while this missive began as a simple look at what is required to be a problem solver, it has turned into a plea that goes like this: WE HAVE BIG CHALLENGES LOOKING US IN THE FACE, PLEASE THINK OF THE BIGGER PICTURE (i.e., not your needs but what we all need) AND BRING US YOUR BEST TO HELP.

Service-focused creativity, we need it now more than ever. What say you? Are you willing to be inconvenienced to think of others and be of service? Are you willing to bring the best you have to offer to get problems solved? Don’t linger on this. Step up. We need you.

  1. So many good thoughts in one piece!! We have adopted so completely the ‘me-ness’ that we have forgotten our deep history of cooperation and the current day ways of life that are built on community and interdependence, such as the First Peoples among us.
