You must give to get.

Name one thing you must give to get any return. Simple. A hug. To be hugged, you must hug.

Business is the same. To get (revenue/profit) you must first give (service).

This seems to get lost on many businesses where the ongoing money mantra takes center stage. But that’s a problem because money is an outcome, so making it the priority is like a hug where you don’t embrace.

So, get things in order. First things first. Serve—give a hug—then gain—get hugged … in that order.

  1. “Go first.” Genuinely offering connection is a universal human signal that one values others and is open to a relationship. Before the offer, there is separation and distance. Once the offer is extended a whole world of potential opens up. Will every offer lead to a long-term relationship? No, it doesn’t work that way, and is why one must ‘go first’ and try, try, try. Start with a smile, extend a hand, say “hi”.

    • I love this thinking: “Once the offer is extended a whole world of potential opens up.” I totally agree here. Every offer of connection/giving/sharing does not lead to a relationship but think of a world where no one tries, life would become like Thomas Hobbes’ description, “nasty, brutish, and short.” Is that the world we want? I certainly hope not.

      • I truly do not think that is what people want, at least not consciously. But we live in an age when all of this gets harder all the time and life is rushing at us so fast that it can be hard just to get through the day. We need to slow down, lessen distractions, and value humans over tech.
