The Most Underrated Skill of Our Time

Compassion. We typically hear that word in terms that make it sound soft or weak. However, not only is compassion not weak, it is a powerful force for good and a crucial skill for success.

We are constantly being told to be tough, to hustle, and to grind, so compassion gets pushed aside, yet compassion is one of the key behaviors that set us apart from machines and automation (think: AI). It’s critical to making us human. It’s what allows us to connect with others, understand their struggles and needs, and then help them. Put simply, it is what allows us to be of service.

But it requires practice. While we are all born with the seeds for compassion—awareness, empathy, and ability—we must cultivate them over time.

This means looking for opportunities to be present for others. It means listening without judgment, without interrupting, and without the need to offer advice. It means a willingness to be inconvenienced to not only see people at their best and worst but to offer a helping hand whenever possible.

One key note: compassion is not about feeling sorry for someone; it’s about seeing them as other humans just like you with needs, hopes, wants, and struggles and then being inspired to help them on their journey. It is not some soft, flowery hug; it is awareness and action that leads to change …for the better.

In business, compassion is a game-changer. It makes customers feel that they matter because they are seen, heard, and cared for. And when they feel like they matter, they come back.

In your personal life, compassion holds relationships together. When you show up for the people you love with concern for their needs and a desire to make their lives better, you show up as the person they can count on. This deepens bonds—reliable bonds that stand up in the toughest circumstances.

It’s clear, compassion is crucial for our collective well-being. It works to create a culture of kindness and understanding and a world of welcome and inclusion.

When we commit to cultivating compassion in our daily lives, we’ll find that it has a profound impact on our businesses, our relationships, our well-being, and our world—a remarkable world where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.

Let’s get practicing!
