I have said it often: asking questions is the best way to get an interaction off on the right foot. It is the quickest way to build relationships. Why? Because nothing says “you matter” better than asking questions.
When you ask someone about their history or for their thoughts, opinions, or know-how, you send a message: “You are valuable. I respect you, and what’s on your mind counts.” There is simply no better way to break down barriers and open the door of someone’s heart and mind.
But be clear: the questions I’m talking about are not yes-or-no questions; they are what-why-how-who-when questions. They are questions that allow for learning. They are questions that allow us a better glimpse into what makes someone else who they are. They help us see others as humans just like us with problems, ideas, hopes, and all manner of baggage that is both good and bad. Put simply, they help put two people on an even playing field where good can bloom.
Next time you are out and looking for something to say, ask a question. It is surprising how something so simple can build something so big.
