In the age-old battle between management and leadership, the difference is service.

Let’s cut to the chase. Managing and leading are not the same thing. Leaders move people to move a mission, while managers control what can be controlled to get predictable results. Managers believe in being productive, while leaders believe in being effective.

The difficulty comes when managers try to control people because people can’t be controlled. People, unlike things, have the power of choice. No matter the coercive tactics or carrots dangled in front of them, people always have the power to decide how they will proceed. And those decisions are impacted by learning, experience, desire, and belief. And while desire and belief should never be underestimated, learning and experience are possibly more vital because the more of that people have, the more they want to have a voice, which makes it increasingly difficult to apply control. This is why autocrats do whatever they can to silence those who are more knowledgeable.

So, what about leadership? Since control appears to be futile, how do leaders move people?

The most effective leaders rely on the inspiration that comes from their undying commitment to a mission and their participation with the team in getting there. This is demonstrated in three critical ways.

  1. Clear communication of direction.
  2. Empowerment of team members to accomplish things.
  3. Encouragement as the team proceeds.

Think of these as three situational styles. When direction is needed, leaders teach by imparting information. When problems need solving or plans need to be made, instead of barking out orders, leaders empower their team members by coaching them on how to think through things and use the available tools to be successful at the work. And when the team is getting results, they act as a mentor by being an always-available obstacle remover and celebrator of success.

Essentially, effective leaders respect and value their followers and seek to draw out the best in them (effectiveness) instead of just wringing out the most from them (productivity). Effective leadership is about being of service to followers to help them best achieve the goals set before them, so the team can accomplish the mission set before it.

So, if you want to lead effectively, learn to serve.
