“You can’t get to ‘wonderful’ without passing through ‘all right.'” – Bill Withers
Editing and refining work is tough. I mean, you’ve pored over it and pored over it and you think it’s good enough…but you just know good enough isn’t good enough. I know perfection isn’t possible but when is your work your best work? Good question, and it’s one only you can answer.
Regardless, don’t get down when you look at something you’ve done and realize that it could be better. To paraphrase the quote above, you can’t get to great without going through good first. Just look at Thomas Edison who, after multiple unsatisfactory efforts in finding a long-lasting filament for the light bulb, remarked, “I haven’t failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”
Don’t settle for good, do your best work because you can.
