Umbrellas. We all use them. We all fight with them.
At best, the umbrella is a “good enough” device. It works when it wants to, and when it doesn’t, it won’t open, or the wind turns it backward, or the fabric comes loose on one of the spines. It’s “good enough,” and we have lived with it for roughly 4500 years. Surely we can do better. We’ve put people on the moon; why can’t we create an indestructible, always-reliable umbrella?
What an opportunity for some forward-thinking, creative entrepreneur! This is a chance to change the game. This is a chance to go beyond “good enough” and invent that forever umbrella.
This is where difference exists. Improving those things we tolerate or simply accept as the way they have always been is the stuff of making the world better.
Want to be of service? Want to start a new venture or simply make your current one better? Look for the “good enoughs.” Look for what we have suffered with forever and seek to create a better version, a best version—a version that doesn’t settle. Carve out your perfect umbrella niche and show the world that you are a green swan, a purple cow, a flower in the desert that stands out and changes things…for the better.
“Here’s to the crazy ones. The misfits. The rebels. The troublemakers. The round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. And they have no respect for the status quo. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can’t do is ignore them. Because they change things. They push the human race forward. And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius. Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world, are the ones who do.” –Steve Jobs
